New Reports Show that Texas Executed an Innocent Man in 2004

A new investigation shows that Cameron Todd Willingham, who was executed in Texas in 2004 after spending 12 years on death row, was innocent. An exhaustive report published today in the New Yorker deconstructs the case against Willingham and finds that all evidence used against him was false.

"There can no longer be any doubt that an innocent person has been executed," Innocence Project Co-Director Barry Scheck said today. "The question now turns to how we can stop it from happening again."

Full Story

This is without question despicable. Everyone in Texas should be demanding they stop the death penalty NOW. Men should be demonstrating everyday.
You can't sit back and allow Texas to get away with this. It is Murder, plain and simple. Someone MUST go to jail for the murder of this man or Texas will continue to kill innocent men. Texas is killing innocent men and have bragged about how fast they do it. Texas has had 8 other men taken off of death row and released because they were innocent.

Please make sure you let Texas politicians know how you feel.

Men should be thankful the Innocence Project works hard to stop the killing of innocent men.

There have been 242 post-conviction DNA exoneration's in United States history. These stories are becoming more familiar as more innocent people gain their freedom through post conviction testing. They are not proof, however, that our system is righting itself.

The common themes that run through these cases — from global problems like poverty and racial issues to criminal justice issues like eyewitness misidentification, invalid or improper forensic science, overzealous police and prosecutors and inept defense counsel — cannot be ignored and continue to plague our criminal justice system.

* Seventeen people had been sentenced to death before DNA proved their innocence and led to their release.
* The average sentence served by DNA exonerees has been 12 years.
* About 70 percent of those exonerated by DNA testing are members of minority groups.
* In almost 40 percent of the cases profiled here, the actual perpetrator has been identified by DNA testing.
* Exonerations have been won in 33 states and Washington, D.C.
