Local police are rounding up deadbeat parents. The Livingston County Sheriff's Department and Michigan State Police are finishing up a month long countywide sweep looking for parents who aren't paying child support. From one door to the next, these sheriff's deputies are hunting down deadbeat parents, but finding parents who don't pay their child support isn't always easy.
Melissa Scharrer, Livingston County Friend of the Court: "They usually don't keep a current address with us."
No matter how difficult it is, this month long sweep has been already successful. Michigan state police and the sheriff's department have rounded up 40 parents who are at least $5,000 overdue in their child support.
Melissa Scharrer: "Kids are important and they usually can't rely on themselves. They need both parents for support."
Melissa Sharrer is the Livingston County Friend of the Court. She says not every parent behind on their payments are deadbeats. With the tough economy, more people just can't afford to support their kids.
Melissa Scharrer: "We're finding people who were good payers, who wanted to pay because of the economy or they lost their job, they've been unable to pay. Our Friend of the Court will work with people. We understand the economy is difficult."
But Scharrer says, far too often people don't respond when she offers to help, and that's why the officers keep knocking on doors looking for the people who won't pay instead of the ones who can't. The officer's have rounded up $27,000.
